Hikosan Shrine Gojinkosai Festival
~

In the olden days, the gojinkosai festival was held to pray for safety, good health, and abundant harvest. On the first day three mikoshi (portable shrines) are carried 900 steps (200 m) down Mt. Hikosan. On the second, priests rush them back up to cheering crowds. This ritual transfer of a god’s body away from its main shrine dates back to when asceticism was popular in the area. Lion dances too!
