At Hakata Machiya Furusato-kan, a museum dedicated to the daily life and annual traditions of Hakata, the annual spring Hinamatsuri Exhibition is being held.
In Hakata, it has long been customary to display hina dolls on Momo no Sekku (Peach Festival), praying for the healthy growth of girls and celebrating together with relatives and neighbors. On the tiered display, alongside the dolls, miniature furnishings modeled after bridal trousseau items are arranged, reflecting the hopes and wishes entrusted by families.
This year’s exhibition places special focus on the dolls and their accompanying implements, introducing the meaning and role of each element. Hina dolls that have been carefully displayed in Hakata households are presented together with a recreated tiered arrangement set in the tatami rooms of a traditional machiya townhouse.
