The Gatalympics are a series of competitions that take place on (and in!) the mudflats of the Ariake Sea. If you like to play in sticky mud, you’ll love this! This region has a tidal range of six meters – the greatest in Japan, which makes for lots of muddy flat areas. The 1st Kashima Gatalympic event was held on May 3rd, 1985. As the Gatalympics became more famous, the mudflats that had been neglected before were improved and the event gained status. The mudflats became an important and valued symbol for the growth of the city as a whole.
At this event there will be running races, cycling races, searches for hidden prizes and other sports on played on the mudflats. Also local Kashima’s food shops will be open. Join or just go to watch this very unique sporting event.
