A very special exhibition in which the entire collection of valuable treasures of Kyoto’s Kosanji Temple will be on display at the Kyushu National Museum. There will be an accompanying narration of the life of the Kamakura-period holy monk, Myoe’s life (1173~1232). Displays include a painting of Buddha, in front of which he cut off his right ear at the age of 24. Exhibited for the first time in Kyushu is “Chouju-jinbutsu-giga”, literally “Animal-person Caricatures”, Japan’s most famous set of four picture scrolls, or emakimono, from the Heian period, belonging to Kosanji Temple.
