Tsukimi (literally moon-viewing) refers to Japanese festivals honoring the autumn moon. Next Thursday you can enjoy moon watching at the beautiful Sumiyoshi Shrine in Hakata. Take a seat on the large sheets that will be laid in front of the main shrine at this free event. There’s a limited quantity of free sake too! Listen to ancient Japanese court music (gagaku), watch the Shinto maiden dance traditional “mai” dance under the beautiful autumn moonlight. Sumiyoshi is the perfect place to enjoy the Autumn’s full moon in a very traditional way.
