For over 500 years, two teams of loincloth-clad men have braved the winter cold to scramble for possession of an 8 kg wooden ball in this unique New Year’s ritual. Victory for the Beach Team is said to ensure a plentiful catch for the coming year, while victory for the Land Team brings a bountiful harvest.
