“Thinning” is an outdoor market which aims to increase public awareness about the problems that Japanese mountains currently face and also to help protect the country’s forests. The name refers to the ecological practice of forest thinning and the timber that can be used from this process. The market features approximately 40 stalls selling everything from outdoor equipment and apparel to wooden crafts and organic sweets. (The Thinning tents used by some of the stalls are sold online.) There will also be live performances, lectures, and workshops. And take the opportunity to walk around the area and explore the shops listed on a special Maebaru map, to be distributed at the event.
