Kappo Yoshida Returns to Tenjin

After temporarily relocating to Hakata’s Tenyamachi district due to redevelopment in Tenjin, the new building for long-established Japanese restaurant Kappo Yoshida is now complete. A media preview was held ahead of its grand reopening on June 10, 2025—marking the restaurant’s long-awaited return to Tenjin after four and a half years.

Tucked away in a side street of Tenjin 1-chome, between Meiji-dori and Showa-dori, the restaurant stands in the same location as its former flagship. The modern facade, featuring sleek wooden louvers, catches the eye without being flashy.

Inside, architectural materials and design elements from the original location have been carefully repurposed. All seating is now chair-style, and the first floor includes counter seating ideal for solo diners. At lunchtime, a limited number of non-reserved seats are available for walk-ins.

Founded in 1963, Kappo Yoshida is known for its refined Japanese cuisine, made with seasonal ingredients and locally sourced seafood. A longtime favorite for business meals and family gatherings, it’s also a go-to lunch spot for nearby office workers.

The restaurant’s signature dish is Taicha—sea bream sashimi served in a sesame-based house sauce. A standout menu item, they go through as much as three tons of sea bream per month. The dish on its own is priced at ¥1,760. During our visit, we tried the popular Taicha & Tempura Half Set (¥2,530), available at lunchtime.

Sliced sea bream is coated in the rich, nutty house sauce and served over glossy, perfectly cooked white rice. For the second serving, the remaining sashimi and sauce are placed on rice and topped with hot tea from a dobin (ceramic teapot) to enjoy as ochazuke.

Other highlights include live squid sashimi, assorted sashimi and tempura à la carte, and in the evenings, seasonal course meals featuring specialties like fugu and mizutaki hotpot.

The second and third floors feature a banquet hall for up to 60 guests and up to 14 private rooms. A special room on the third floor includes exclusive touches such as custom bell-shaped tableware, offering a refined and private dining experience in central Fukuoka.

Each private room is named after a mountain in Kyushu, with elegant Hakata-ori nameplates displayed at the entrance—adding a local, artisanal touch.
