Fukuoka City is considering construction of a new road to ease traffic jams in central Tenjin with an estimated cost of 20 billion yen. Tenjin’s Watanabedori is a well-known problem spot for traffic jams. The City hopes to add an alternative road to ease traffic flow. They have proposed the usage of Tenjindori-sen, a street just east of City Hall, with plans to extend it by a total of 370m (140m north, 230m south). The date of construction has not yet been decided. City Hall must first meet for discussions with the landowner in early 2013. The cost of the proposed construction (¥20,000,000,000) is certain to polarise opinions within the community. The new road is tipped to be a hot button issue next year.
