On May 28, Kitakyushu City announced 21 more confirmed cases of the new coronavirus infections, including four with unknown transmission routes. The cases involve eleven medical workers from the Moji Medical Center and the Kitakyushu General Hospital. Reflecting upon the sharp increase in the number of daily cases, Fukuoka Governor Hiroshi Ogawa mentioned the possibility of extending business closure requests for some of the local eateries and live music venues even after May 31. The governor also asks Kitakyushu residents to refrain from non-essential outings. The city has seen 4.59 infections per 100,000 population in the past six days, approaching the nation’s guideline of possible re-declaration of a state of emergency (“5 infections per 100,000 population in the past week.”). The city has recorded 43 new cases in the last six days. The cumulative total of COVID-19 infections for Fukuoka Prefecture is now 703. Sources: Nikkei / Asahi / NHK
