30% Increase in Culling Area for State-Owned Forests

The Kyushu regional bureau for state-owned forests announced that it would expand by 30% to 15,000 hectares the area in which it would thin out the trees. The objective is to enhance the forests’ capabilities to absorb CO2 and keep the pledge made in the Kyoto Protocol for greenhouse gas reduction. The bureau manages 530,000 hectares and began actively thinning out the forests last year.
