Akutagawa Prize Awarded to 23-Year-Old Graduate Student in Fukuoka

Yuui Suzuki, a 23-year-old graduate student at Seinan Gakuin University in Fukuoka, has won the prestigious Akutagawa Prize for their novel Goethe Said It All. The selection was announced on January 15 during the 172nd Akutagawa and Naoki Prize meeting in Tokyo.

Originally from Fukushima Prefecture, Suzuki debuted as a writer after earning an honorable mention for the Hayashi Fumiko Literary Prize with the short story How Many Books Does a Person Need? last year while still an undergraduate. Currently studying English literature in graduate school, Suzuki balances academic research with writing.

This was Suzuki’s first nomination for the Akutagawa Prize. The award-winning novel follows a professor researching the works of Goethe. Through the protagonist’s journey to verify whether a so-called Goethe quote is authentic, the story delves deeply into the nature and meaning of language, portrayed with meticulous detail.
