The grass burn-off in the Mt. Aso area began Feb 10, with the assistance of 60 volunteers. On the first day, 26 hectares were burned. The plans are that by April, 16,000 hectares will be burned. Particularly for farmers in the area, the annual spring burn-off is very important as it stops the growth of underbrush and harmful insects.
