The Arita College of Ceramics in Saga Prefecture, which trains future ceramists to carry on the local tradition, revealed that only 15 of their 46 students who will graduate or complete other courses in the spring have found work at local kilns. This is a 50% reduction from the 30 students who were hired last year. The low number of hires is attributed to plummeting ceramics sales caused by the economic downturn.
