The Fisheries Research Agency confirmed that the weight of the edible adductor muscles of the artificially bred pen shells in Isahaya Bay is twice that of those which grow naturally. Pen shells have off limits for fishing in Isahaya Bay for 17 years because the government’s land reclamation project has created oxygen-deficient pockets. Artificial breeding is viewed as a measure to provide stable income for local watermen.
