Asian Elephants to Arrive at Fukuoka City Zoo in July

Fukuoka City Zoo unveiled its newly renovated elephant enclosure to the press on June 26, ahead of receiving four Asian elephants from Myanmar in July. The elephants will be transported from a specialized facility in Yangon using a chartered plane. The upgraded enclosure is designed to prevent lack of exercise, featuring a playground three times larger than before, a 13-meter slope, a 3-meter deep pool, and various interactive elements to keep the elephants engaged. Zoo Director Kohei Kawagoe expressed excitement about the elephants’ return after nearly seven years, encouraging visitors to experience their presence and habits up close. Despite some opposition from the Myanmar community in Japan, Kawagoe emphasized the zoo’s focus on academic exchange and the preservation of rare species, separate from political issues.
