Autonomous Bus Trial in Fukuoka’s Island City

A public trial of an autonomous bus began on November 9 in Island City, Higashi Ward, Fukuoka, aiming to improve local transportation. The driverless bus runs seven daily routes with an onboard operator for safety. Equipped with precision sensors, it automatically detects obstacles and obeys traffic signals. The vehicle carries up to eight passengers at a top speed of 20 km/h, linking facilities such as schools and hospitals that are over a 15-minute walk apart. The trial continues through November 21, collecting user feedback and data to evaluate the potential for permanent service. Source: Island City / KBC / KBC 2
