Beppu City Considers Implementing Lodging Tax

Beppu City, Oita Prefecture, has begun discussions on introducing a lodging tax to secure stable funding for tourism development. On February 3, the city established an expert committee to examine the proposal, with tax collection expected to begin in fiscal 2026 at the earliest.

During the first committee meeting, Mayor Yasushiro Nagano emphasized the need to ensure that tourists find the tax reasonable and beneficial. Lodging taxes are a form of non-statutory local tax, and 11 municipalities in Japan have already implemented similar measures. If adopted, visitors staying at onsen accommodations in Beppu would pay both an accommodation tax and the existing bathing tax. Source: OAB
