Best Denki has announced that its Fukuoka Honten (Main Store) in the Tenjin district will officially close on February 15, 2026. The closure is part of the “Tenjin Big Bang” initiative, a large-scale urban redevelopment project led by Fukuoka City to modernize the downtown core.
The current structure, known as the Best Denki Misuzu-an Kyodo Building, was completed in October 1994. At the time of its opening, it was the largest consumer electronics retail space in Japan. The site has been occupied by Best Denki in various forms since 1956, following the company’s initial founding in the area in 1953.
The redevelopment will also result in the permanent closure of Misuzu-an, a traditional soba restaurant that has shared the site for over 70 years. While specific plans for the site have not been finalized, the project is expected to follow the district’s trend of replacing aging retail blocks with high-rise, mixed-use office and hotel towers.
Yamada Holdings, the parent company of Best Denki, has stated that a new location is scheduled to open in Spring 2026. However, the company has not yet disclosed the specific address for the relocated store. Until the final day of operation, the Tenjin flagship is conducting a “Complete Closing Sale” to clear existing inventory.
