BOJ Fukuoka Branch Maintains Outlook for Kyushu–Okinawa Economy

The Bank of Japan’s Fukuoka Branch kept its regional economic assessment for Kyushu and Okinawa unchanged on October 21, stating that while some sectors show weakness, the overall economy continues to recover moderately. The report noted steady private consumption supported by food sales and inbound tourism despite higher prices. However, housing investment was downgraded for the first time in 21 months, with new housing starts in August down 19.8% year-on-year due to rising material costs. Branch Manager Kenji Sakuta said that while office and condominium demand remains strong in central Fukuoka, oversupply is seen in parts of Kumamoto and Nagasaki, calling for attention to regional differences.
