JR East and JR West announced plans to roll out constant security camera surveillance in at least half of its bullet train cars on the Tohoku, Akita, Yamagata, Joetsu and Hokuriku Shinkansen lines starting on Sep. 9. The two companies have already decided to adopt expanded video camera usage on its Tokkaido and Sanin Shinkansen lines by year’s end. Other JR companies, including JR Kyushu, are considering adopting similar moves in light of an incident this June in which a passenger immolated himself on board a shinkansen.
