Fukuoka Prefecture has announced that the general public can apply to be torchbearers in the build-up to the 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games. The torch relay will pass through Fukuoka Prefecture next May. The flame will start in Omuta on May 12 and finish in Kitakyushu City the following day after passing though 20 municipalities in the prefecture, including areas that have been badly affected by heavy rainfall in the last couple of years. Up to 180 runners will participate in the Fukuoka leg of the relay with each person carrying the torch approximately 200 meters. This number includes 22 members of the public. Applications are open to individuals who were born before April 1, 2008, and have a relationship to Fukuoka. The prefecture will accept submissions throughout the month of August and will announce the names of those who have been selected in December. Source: NHK News Web, 6/20/2019
