A trial burning of the debris from Ishinomaki, Miyagi Prefecture, generated during last year’s earthquake and tsunami, was temporarily halted by about 30 area residents. Six trucks tried to enter the incineration facility about 9:00 a.m., and the residents surrounded the trucks and staged a sit-in. Kitakyushu is the first city in western Japan to conduct a trial burning of the debris, which is planned for three days in two locations. This shipment contained about 80 tons of wood scraps with less than 100 bequerels of radioactive cesium per kilogram.
