On Sep. 7, Fukuoka City revealed that it adjusted its budget estimate for the Urban Expressway extension into Island City to ¥29.2 billion, up ¥4.2 billion from the initial estimate of ¥25 billion. According to an official familiar with the issue, the budget was revised upward due to revisions to some of the designs as well as increased prices of materials and labor ahead of the construction rush for the 2020 Olympics. The planned expressway extension will run about 2.5 km from the Kashiihama ramp to a spot near the Fukuoka Children’s Hospital on Island City. It is slated to open by the end of fiscal 2020.
