Fukuoka International Airport began construction on an expansion and renovation of the international passenger terminal building on May 20. In anticipation of a recovery in demand after the new coronavirus is under control, the functions of the terminal will be enhanced. Construction is scheduled to be completed by the end of March 2023, at a total cost of approximately 50 billion yen. The total floor space will be expanded to about 136,000 square meters, roughly twice the current area. A dedicated bus route connecting domestic and international flights with subway stations will be constructed to reduce travel time from the current 15 minutes to 5 minutes. In addition to increasing the number of inspection lanes at the departure security checkpoint, the concourse will be extended, and the number of boarding bridges will be increased to 12, double the current number, so that passengers will not have to take buses to board their planes, thus enhancing convenience. The international terminal has been in service since 1999, and a second runway will come into operation in 2025. Source: Nikkei
