Court Blocks Residents’ Bid to Rescind Reopening Approval for Nuclear Reactor

On June 17, Fukuoka District Court rejected a request from residents to cancel permission to restart Kyushu Electric Power’s No. 1 and No. 2 reactors at the Sendai Nuclear Power Plant in Kagoshima Prefecture. Thirty-three residents from ten prefectures including Kagoshima had been demanding cancellation of the safety approval of the two reactors, pointing out the irrationality in the assessment of the aftereffects of volcanic eruptions. While the judge remarked that ‘doubt’ remains in the safety guidelines with the current lack of methods to precisely assess the probability and the scale of eruptions, the guideline cannot be deemed ‘irrational’ without proving the possibility of a catastrophic eruption.
