Details on Fukuoka’s Emergency Extension Announced

On the evening of Feb. 2., the national government officially announced an extended state of emergency for ten prefectures, including Fukuoka, until Mar. 7. Reflecting on the announcement, Fukuoka Prefecture continues to request self-restraint on non-essential outings during the day and night, reduced-hour business operations at local eateries, and more. The prefecture also implemented for an early lifting of the SOE to the government; (1) if the average number of daily infections in the past seven days falls below 180 for seven consecutive days, and (2) the occupancy rate of hospital beds to treat the new coronavirus infections falls below 50%. Seitaro Hattori, Vice-Governor of the prefecture, explained that local medical facilities face difficult situations, despite the new infections’ downward trend. Between Feb. 1 and 2, Fukuoka Prefecture reported daily infections of 77 and 63, falling below one hundred for the first time since Dec. 22, 2020. However, the number of seriously ill patients reached the record-largest 39 as of Feb. 2, bringing hospital beds’ occupancy rate for critical care to 35.5%.
