Diamond Chip Achieves 120 GHz Output

Saga University researchers announced on December 8 that they developed a diamond-based power semiconductor capable of amplifying radio signals up to 120 GHz, a performance among the highest for the material. The device covers both microwave and millimeter-wave ranges, enabling potential use in 6G base stations and satellite communications. Nearly all of the roughly 100 prototypes reached the targeted frequency through micro-fabricated electrodes and new packaging techniques suited to hard diamond substrates. The team plans to supply sample devices to major electronics firms in early 2026. Lead researcher Makoto Kasu said the technology’s reliability has improved significantly, supporting commercialization through a new company established in Saga. Source: Saga University
