Earthquake Resistance Assessment Requested For Genkai Nuclear Plant

The Japan Nuclear Regulation Authority (NRA) is set to order Kyushu Electric Power Co., Inc. (Kyuden) to re-evaluate the risk of regional earthquakes to the Genkai nuclear power plant. The plant in Saga Prefecture has been designed to withstand the potential earthquakes occurring at active regional faults, while additional assessments for quakes with unknown epicenters would be required. If NRA finds Genkai Plant’s safety standard insufficient in the next three years, additional construction might be needed while holding the plant operation. Source: NHK / Asahi
