The Imperial Household Agency announced that Emperor’s and Empress’ Cups will be presented to winners of the Super Series International Wheelchair Tennis Tour Japan Open held in Iizuka, Fukuoka. Winners of the men’s and women’s National Wheelchair Basketball Competition will also be awarded both trophies, while the Emperor’s Cup will be given to the victors of the National Wheelchair Ekiden (long distance relay race). The Imperial Household Agency presents the Emperor’s Cup to the winner of 20 sporting contests and the Empress’s Cup to the champions of 12 competitions. The tournaments are chosen according to their size, history, and popularity. This is the first time that the Emperor’s and Empress’ Cups were awarded to winners of disability sports contests.
