Marine World Uminonakamichi in Fukuoka has successfully bred around 100 juveniles of the endangered Yamano-kami, a freshwater fish native only to Kyushu. The species has declined due to river damming and was listed as endangered in 2007. The aquarium replicated natural spawning conditions using salt and temperature controls and bamboo tubes. This marks Japan’s first successful captive breeding of the species. Source: NHK
