Estimate for New Civic Center Released

On Feb. 16, City Hall announced that the cost to replace the aging Civic Center in Suzaki (Chuo Ward) could reach ¥20 billion, including the cost of demolition. The City plans to build a new “cultural hub” on a nearby site located in Suzaki Park south of the Prefectural Art Museum. The new facility, which would include a 2,000-seat main hall and a smaller 800-seat event space, is estimated to cost ¥16 billion, while demolition of the old building will cost ¥4 billion. The City aims to use a private finance initiative (PFI) for the project, and hopes to solicit open bids in 2018. If all goes according to plan, construction would begin in 2020 with completion slated for fiscal 2023. Source: Mainichi Shimbun, 2/23
