Government Sets Expert Panel to Advance Shimonoseki–Kitakyushu Road

The Japanese government decided to establish an expert panel to examine funding and construction issues for the planned Shimonoseki–Kitakyushu Road, a proposed third road link between Kyushu and Honshu. The project would connect Kitakyushu’s Kokurakita Ward and Hikoshima in Shimonoseki via an approximately eight-kilometer route, including a 2.2-kilometer suspension bridge over the Kanmon Strait. The decision followed formal urban planning approval by Kitakyushu City and Yamaguchi Prefecture last month. With construction costs expected to exceed the initial estimate of up to ¥350 billion due to rising expenses, the panel will review funding sources, construction methods, and possible toll levels. The transport ministry aims to compile a basic policy by around summer 2026. Source: NHK News / Yomiuri Shimbun
