A factory producing ethanol from waste generated in shochu production opened in Nichinan City of Miyazaki Prefecture on April 7. The prefecture is the largest producer of shochu liquor in Japan, and waste disposal costs have been a burden for mid and small-sized distilleries. The new system, which ferments the waste with sweet potato scraps to produce 1.2 tons of ethanol per day, will reduce the disposal costs by around half. Source: Tokyo Shimbun / MRT
