A ceremony to mark the first shipment of Japanese red cedar to the US was held in Hita City last month. Hita Lumber Cooperative Association took an order of 1,800 pieces of Hita sugi cedar lumber from an American company in 2018. While the association has exported their products to Asian countries including China and Korea since 2010, it is the first export to a western country. After the ceremony, lumber was also shipped to Tokyo to be used in the Olympic Village for 2020. Source: Mainichi Shimbun, 4/10/2019
