Flowers Cut off Historic Wisteria Tree to Discourage Visits – Fukuoka Marathon Canceled – New COVID-19 Infections Drop to Four

On April 28, Fukuoka Prefecture announced four more cases of COVID-19 infections, including two linked to the in-hospital cluster at Fukuoka Kinen Hospital. The new cases bring the cumulative total in the prefecture to 625. Meanwhile, in Yame City, concern for crowds at the Kurogi no Ofuji (a designated natural monument of Japan) forced local groups to cut down all of the wisteria flowers in full bloom. The spot reportedly attracted approximately 1,000 visitors per day on the previous weekend. The region had already announced the cancellation of the wisteria festival scheduled between mid-April to early May. Additionally, the committee for the Fukuoka Marathon announced its cancelation. The event attracted over 13,000 runners and involved approximately 7,000 volunteer staff members last year. It was scheduled for November 2020 in the cities of Fukuoka and Itoshima.
