The Kyushu Economic Federation (Kyukeiren) and the Japan Business Federation (Keidanren) have agreed to collaborate on advancing the “New Silicon Island Kyushu” initiative—an effort to establish Kyushu as a global semiconductor hub and a driver of Japan’s economic growth. At the Kyushu Economic Forum held in Fukuoka on March 12, attended by approximately 200 participants, Kyukeiren Chairman Sumio Kuratomi highlighted ongoing high levels of semiconductor investment in the region, spurred by TSMC’s entry into Kumamoto. Kyukeiren outlined three key priorities: accelerating the clustering of semiconductor-related industries, positioning Kyushu as a launchpad for domestic and international business, and establishing a science park to foster innovation through industry-academia collaboration. Keidanren Vice Chairman Jun Sawada expressed strong support, calling the region’s semiconductor momentum a symbol of Japan’s resurgence. Speaking to reporters after the forum, Kuratomi also emphasized the need for sustainable wage increases among local businesses and urged appropriate price transfers to help small and mid-sized enterprises keep pace.
