A beach cleaning robot was test-operated at Oshima, Munakata City, in late September. To protect the beachscape of the area, which is part of UNESCO’s World Heritage Site “Sacred Island of Okinoshima and Associated Sites in the Munakata Region,” researchers of Kyushu Institute of Technology partnered with a citizen’s organization and launch BC-ROBOP (Beach Clean Robot Project) in 2018. During the test, a four-wheeled robot traveled through the sandy beach while carrying hefty beach trash such as cans, plastic bottles and fishery nets. The project aims to reduce the work of cleaning volunteers who currently collect waste by hand. Source: BC-ROBOP, 10/17/2019
