Fukuoka Airport Introduces Smart Lanes

In the face of long lines for security checks at Fukuoka Airport due to a shortage of personnel, the airport’s operating company has announced plans to introduce “Smart Lanes” at security checkpoints in the new fiscal year. These lanes are expected to reduce wait times and ease congestion by allowing passengers to keep laptops and liquids in their luggage during screening. Fukuoka Airport has seen a resurgence in passenger numbers amid the pandemic, while simultaneously grappling with a shortfall of security personnel. This has led to hour-long waits for security checks during peak times. To alleviate congestion, the operating company will implement the new “Smart Lanes” at security checkpoints in the coming fiscal year. These lanes employ CT technology, commonly used in medical settings, which allows passengers to keep laptops and liquids in their bags during screening. Multiple passengers can approach the lanes simultaneously, with those ready being checked in turn. This innovation is expected to increase the number of screenings per hour by approximately 1.5 times. The operating company plans to introduce Smart Lanes at domestic security checkpoints in phases, with completion slated for the end of March next year. Source: NHK
