Fukuoka Asian Culture Prize Honors Historian

The 35th Fukuoka Asian Culture Prize ceremony was held in Fukuoka City with Prince and Princess Akishino in attendance. Historian Kurayoshi Takara, emeritus professor at the University of the Ryukyus, received the Grand Prize for his work in restoring Shuri Castle’s main hall, destroyed during WWII and again in a 2019 fire. He highlighted the Ryukyu Kingdom’s centuries of cultural exchange across Asia, with Shuri Castle as its symbol. The Academic Prize went to Korean historian Baik Young-seo, and the Arts and Culture Prize to Vietnamese architect Vo Trong Nghia. Source: Fukuoka Prize
