Fukuoka City Experiences Significant Population Influx in 2023

According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, Fukuoka City saw a notable increase in its population in 2023, with a net gain of 11,792 residents, marking it as the third highest city in Japan for population growth, following Tokyo’s 23 wards and Osaka City. This figure represents an increase of 2,080 people from 2022. Meanwhile, Kumamoto City also witnessed a rise, with a net gain of 1,384 residents. In contrast, Fukuoka was the only prefecture in the Kyushu-Okinawa region with more people moving in than out. The other seven prefectures experienced a net population loss, with Nagasaki Prefecture being the most affected.
