Fukuoka City to Distribute Child Tracking Devices

Fukuoka City will distribute a child tracking device to 85,000 elementary school students in the city beginning in the fall of 2019. Fukuoka City Mayor Soichiro Takashima announced at a press conference on June 10 that the Bluetooth tracking device will record locations that the students pass by such as convenience stores and public facilities. A Fukuoka-based startup called Otta developed the system for this government-industry collaboration project. While the police will mainly use recorded data, a paid service for parents to access the records of their children will also be available. Source: NHK News Web, 6/10/2019
