Fukuoka City Tourist Accommodation Tax Headed for Approval

A proposal calling for the introduction of a tourist accommodation tax was presented to the Fukuoka City legislative assembly on September 6. This form of taxation is levied at tourists staying in hotels and other forms of accommodation. The aim is to create revenue for the tourism sector. The proposal is expected to be approved as it already has support from the majority of the assembly. Fukuoka Prefecture is also discussing whether or not to introduce similar measures, and this means that double taxation is a possibility if the city does adopt the tax. The mayor put forward 41 bills to the assembly during the session, including a revised budget that provides support for recovery efforts in the areas affected by July’s torrential downpours.
