Fukuoka City and Yangon City concluded a sistership agreement on Dec. 7, 2016 and Fukuoka City has provided support for Yangon City’s water infrastructure through JICA beginning in 2012. The cities continue in “building relationships with regional cities that are in charge of urban infrastructure in order to support local companies’ overseas development” and the two cities entered into memorandum to strengthening cooperation in May 2014. Plans call for the expanding infrastructure exports with support from the Japanese government. Fukuoka City which is experienced in “developing a compact and comfortable city” aims to contribute its knowledge and experience to solve urban issues and create some impact in Asia as well as supporting local companies’ overseas development through business opportunities such as involvement in from ODA work projects involving the government and private sector. The following are key areas of focus:
- Sending specialists for strengthening waterworks management ability
- Accepting trainees for sewerage system maintenance management
- Working towards waste landfill method “the Fukuoka method” construction etc.
Readers might also be interested to know that three persons from Myanmar have received awards in the past from the “Fukuoka Prize” (founded in 1990) and managed by Fukuoka City and Yokatopia Foundation. The Grand Prize in 2015 was received by Dr. Thant Myint-U who was the founder and present chairman of aforementioned “Yangon Heritage Trust”.
