Fukuoka Climbs Population Rankings Despite Aging Challenge

In 2023, Fukuoka Prefecture’s total population surpassed Hokkaido, ranking it eighth nationally with over 5.1 million residents. Despite this growth, the region faces challenges with an aging population, evident from the increase in residents aged 75 and above, which now represents 15.2% of the total population. The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications highlights that while Fukuoka experiences a net social increase due to migration, it simultaneously suffers a natural decrease due to higher death rates compared to birth rates. Fukuoka Prefecture continues to focus on countermeasures against population decline and strategies for attracting and retaining residents. Source: NHK
