Fukuoka Faces Record High in Internet Banking Fraud

In Fukuoka Prefecture, fraudulent internet banking transactions reached an all-time high last year, with financial damages amounting to approximately 218.5 million yen, over ten times the previous year’s total. The prefectural police recorded a significant increase in cybercrime, including 174 cases of fraudulent money transfers, marking a more than twelvefold surge compared to the year before. Authorities highlighted phishing scams, where victims are tricked into entering their banking details on fake websites, as a prevalent method of theft. The police are urging residents to verify the authenticity of emails claiming to be from financial institutions and to access banking services through official sites or apps directly, in order to combat the rise in cybercrime.
