Fukuoka Lawmakers React to Possible Snap Lower House Election

Speculation over a possible snap dissolution of Japan’s House of Representatives in late January has unsettled lawmakers from Fukuoka, following reports that the Takaichi administration may dissolve the chamber at the opening of the ordinary Diet session on January 23. Liberal Democratic Party lawmaker Makoto Oniki said preparations were being rushed, noting he had expected any election to come only after passage of the new fiscal year budget and warning that an early dissolution could delay economic measures. He also cited uncertainty following the end of the LDP’s long-standing coalition with Komeito. Opposition lawmakers, including Constitutional Democratic Party member Shuji Inatomi, criticized the timing as politically driven and said it risked creating a policy vacuum while inflation remains a pressing issue. If dissolution proceeds, voting is expected on February 8 or 15, with the prime minister expected to clarify her intentions later this month. Source: KBC News / TNC News
