Fukuoka Libraries Missing Over 19,000 Books

Over 19,000 books remain unreturned to libraries in Fukuoka City since three years ago. While many people enjoy reading at home amid the ongoing pandemic, the city’s main library in Momochi and its ten branches revealed the shocking number back in Oct. 2021. Some 3,000 books remain unreturned for twenty years. Municipal libraries usually send email and phone notifications to users at the seven-day overdue point, then mail out printed reminders regularly after a month. The cost of those reminders comes to about ¥150,000 each year and cuts into funds that could be used to buy new books. Source: NHK
