Fukuoka Police Develop Bicycle Detection System

The Fukuoka Prefectural Police have joined forces with four companies to develop Oshicharikun, Japan’s first automatic system for warning bike riders in busy areas where they should be pushing their bikes. The system uses a combination of laser sensors, electric signboards and speakers to detect bicycles being ridden in no-ride zones, then instantaneously broadcasts video and audio messages that tell riders to “push your bike.”  The system is currently being tested on two sections of sidewalk in Tenjin, in front of Parco and in front of Mitsukoshi, and the police aim to put it into practical use in the near future.
