Fukuoka Prefectural Police installed four traffic lights that communicate with visually-impaired pedestrians via a smartphone application. The free app, “ShinGO!,” informs users of the color of traffic signals, using audio guidance and vibrations. In the prefecture, about 14% of traffic lights have sound systems to support visually-impaired people; however, the use of those functions is limited during the night and early morning. The prefecture plans to introduce the new system more widely around the prefecture. Source: NHK
